On April 11, 2025, the port of Capo d’Orlando will be transformed into a learning and awareness center for the pupils of the schools in the area, on the occasion of the “National Sea Day”. This annual event is an opportunity for young people to explore the marine world and understand the importance of environmental protection and safety at sea.
The day will begin at 08:30 with the arrival of the students at the port, welcomed by the staff of the Capo d’Orlando marina. The program will be articulated through a series of meetings with Pierdomenico Miscioscia, commander of the Maritime District Office of Sant’Agata Militello, and with Giuseppe Mendolia, commander of the local maritime office of Capo d’Orlando, who will introduce the children to the themes of maritime education and ecological responsibility.
Another key part of the day will be dedicated to science and conservation. The Zooprophylactic Institute of Palermo, ARPA Sicilia and Dr. Forte, President of ANAPI Pesca, will animate the morning with informative interventions regarding marine fauna and sustainable fishing practices.
The practical activities will not stop there. The students will participate in demonstrations on environmental sampling techniques by ARPA, and on the use of sailing, led by the sailing expert Lucio Cozzupoli. In addition, they will attend a simulation of rescue at sea by the maritime rescuers of the Coast Guard.
The excitement will grow with boarding on the catamarans of the Spartivento Group charter company, where the students will be able to live a direct experience at sea. During the outing, there will be a demonstration of traditional fishing techniques and, a particularly touching moment, the release of a Caretta Caretta turtle by the Zooprophylactic Institute.
The day will end with the return to port and the disembarkation of the pupils, bringing with them not only indelible memories, but also greater awareness and respect for the sea and the environment.
The “Day of the Sea” represents an important educational initiative that combines adventure, learning and responsibility. We can’t wait to see the enthusiastic faces of the kids and inspire them to become the custodians of our precious marine ecosystem!
