Today, the port of Capo d’Orlando celebrated the “National Sea Day” with great enthusiasm, creating an educational event aimed at the students of the John Paul II Comprehensive Institute and the Lucio Piccolo High School of Capo d’Orlando, as well as the students of the “No Limits – Beyond the Wall” Association, all eager to explore the wonderful marine world and learn the importance of environmental protection.
The day began with the reception of the boys by the staff of the Capo d’Orlando marina and continued with training meetings conducted by Captains Pierdomenico Miscioscia and Giuseppe Mendolia, respectively of the Port Authority of Sant’Agata Militello and Capo d’Orlando. The young participants were introduced to the themes of maritime education and ecological responsibility, emphasizing the importance of protecting our sea.
The students then had the opportunity to learn important topics from professionals in the sector, thanks to the interventions of the Zooprophylactic Institute of Palermo, ARPA Sicily and Dr. Forte, President of ANAPI Pesca. The presentations provided valuable information on marine wildlife and sustainable fishing practices, stimulating active debate among participants.
The climax of the day was reached with the outing at sea aboard the catamarans of the Spartivento Group and the sailboat helmed by the sailing expert Lucio Cozzupoli, at the conclusion of the “Vela Scuola” project coordinated by the teacher Laura Chisari of the Comprehensive Institute.
On board the boats, the students closely watched a demonstration of traditional fishing techniques thanks to the collaboration of local fishermen, environmental sampling techniques by ARPA and a simulation of rescue at sea, conducted by Coast Guard rescuers.
In addition, the release of a Caretta Caretta turtle, organized by the Zooprophylactic Institute, touched everyone’s heart, underlining how respect for the sea and the protection of it from all forms of pollution is an essential condition for the well-being of the flora and fauna that inhabit it.
At the end of the day, the students returned to port enriched not only by new knowledge, but also by the awareness of being the custodians of our precious marine ecosystem.
The event represented an important step towards raising awareness of the new generations regarding environmental protection.
We thank all the participants, associations, speakers and institutions involved for making this memorable day possible, certain that the young people will bring with them indelible memories and a renewed commitment to the protection of our sea.
